Shakti Project: Building a Future Free from Human Trafficking

The Shakti Project, implemented by Barasat Unnayan Prostuti (BUP), is dedicated to preventing human trafficking, safeguarding survivors, and facilitating their complete rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society. Our comprehensive approach addresses five key components to support survivors, foster community empowerment, advocate for change, and dismantle the structures that enable trafficking.

Objectives: The Shakti Project focuses on preventing trafficking, safeguarding survivors, and facilitating their complete rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.

Implementation: The Shakti Project strives to create a future free from trafficking by addressing the following five key components:

  1. Case Management and Mental Health:

    • We strengthen the rights-based case management system in West Bengal, prioritizing restorative care and mental health support. This ensures the well-being of survivors throughout their healing journey.
  2. Self-Help Groups (SHG) and Livelihoods:

    • The project empowers survivors through the formation and support of Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This fosters a sense of community and shared goals while promoting meaningful employment opportunities and facilitating access to entitlements that lead to economic independence.
  3. MIS/Technology Integration:

    • Shakti leverages technology for greater impact. We build the capacity of survivor leaders and social workers to utilize relevant apps and Management Information Systems (MIS). This empowers data-driven decision making and facilitates communication with local authorities through presentations using MIS data.
  4. Survivors' Leadership:

    • Recognizing the power of survivor voices, the project cultivates leadership skills and capabilities within the survivor community. This empowers them to advocate for systemic change and hold those in power accountable.
  5. Community-Based Rehabilitation Promotion:

    • Shakti doesn't limit its impact geographically. The project promotes the successful Community-Based Rehabilitation model used in West Bengal. This aims to enable other Community-Based Organizations across India to replicate this approach and expand its reach to combat trafficking nationwide.

Through these components, the Shakti Project supports survivors, fosters community empowerment, advocates for change, and ultimately aims to dismantle the structures that enable trafficking, ensuring successful reintegration for survivors. Our goal is to build a future free from human trafficking, where survivors are empowered and communities are resilient.
